Latham was officially planned and settled in 1880. The community got its name from Judge Gardiner Latham, who was one of the very first people to settle in the area. A local post office, which helps people send and receive mail, has been open in Latham since 1892.

Latham is located in the southwestern part of Moniteau County. It sits along State Highway E. The community is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of California, which is the main town and county seat of Moniteau County.
