History of Lauderdale Lakes
The lakes in this area are named after James Lauderdale. James and his family moved here from New York in 1841. He built the first house in the area in 1842.
James, his brother-in-law, and his cousin each bought 160 acres of land. They paid $1.25 per acre, which was the price under the Homestead Act. After a short trip back to New York, James returned in September 1842.
He built a log cabin right by the lake shore. However, his wife preferred living away from the water. So, in 1855, they built a bigger house near the main road. Eight years later, in 1893, a man named John Wheeler from Chicago bought the shoreline property. He then started building the Sterlingworth Hotel.
Geography and Nature

Peterson Island Woods Preserve
Between Green Lake and Middle Lake, there is a special place called the Peterson Island Woods Preserve. It is a 40-acre park with a small walking trail. This preserve was created in 2016. It was named by the Kettle Moraine Land Trust board to honor Jerry Peterson. He was their president for 15 years.
