Where the Launière River Flows
The Launière River is surrounded by other important water areas. Knowing these helps us understand its journey:
- North side: Ruisseau de l'Enfer, Rivière aux Écorces North-East, Chicoutimi River.
- East side: Jacques-Cartier River, Jacques-Cartier Lake, Rivière du Milieu.
- South side: Jacques-Cartier River, Rocheuse River.
- West side: Lac Champlain, Cavée River, Rivière aux Écorces.
The River's Starting Point
The Launière River begins at Honorine Lake. This lake is about 2.7 kilometers long and sits very high up, at 844 meters above sea level. Mountains surround the lake, with the tallest peak reaching 1001 meters to the southwest.
Honorine Lake gets its water mainly from lakes Bert and Mongeau, and another small stream. There's a dam at the lake's outlet, which is located on its northwest side.
From its source, the Launière River flows for about 35.5 kilometers. During its journey, the river drops 294 meters in elevation.
The River's Journey
As the Launière River flows, it passes through several lakes and areas:
- It starts by flowing west, passing between two mountains.
- Then, it turns south, going through lakes like Jeanne, Levitt, Castonguay, and Lac du Grand Chien. There's a forest road that crosses a dam at the end of Lac du Grand Chien.
- After that, it flows through Lac Launière, which receives water from Lac La Giroflée and Lake Frazie.
- Further along, the river crosses Lac du Renflement and Lac Étincelant.
- It then flows through areas with rapids and passes Lac des Sentinelles.
- The river continues south through a deep valley, encountering more rapids.
- In its lower section, it flows south, passing under a forest road bridge and collecting water from Frank Lake and Lac Dorothy.
- Finally, it meets the Rivière du Milieu before flowing into the Jacques-Cartier River.
The Launière River joins the north bank of the Jacques-Cartier River. From this meeting point, the water travels another 60.7 kilometers down the Jacques-Cartier River until it reaches the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
How the Launière River Got Its Name
The name "Lac Launière" first appeared on a map of the Laurentides National Park in 1954. It's believed that the name comes from a family of gamekeepers called Launière. They used to live near a lake at Christmas, about 45 kilometers south of a place called L'Étape.
The name "Rivière Launière" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
