Early Village Life and Industries
By 1860, Laurens was home to 726 people. It had several important businesses. These included a tannery, which processed animal hides, and an iron foundry, which made metal products. There was also a sawmill for cutting wood and a cotton mill. The cotton mill used water power from Gilbert Lake to run its machines. You can also find a sulfur spring north of the village.
The Arrival of the Railroad
A big change came to Laurens on July 4, 1901, when the Southern New York Railroad arrived. This railroad connected Laurens to Oneonta. It made it easier to transport goods and people. For example, a logging business owner named Emmons Peck used the Laurens station. He shipped large amounts of tanning bark and lumber from his mill near Gilbert Lake. This created many jobs for people in the area.
