Lawrence John Delaney was born on May 29, 1935, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He is an American scientist and businessman. He held important roles in the United States government. From 1999 to 2001, he was the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Acquisition). He also briefly served as the Acting United States Secretary of the Air Force in 2001.

Early Life and Education

Lawrence Delaney grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He went to Holy Spirit High School. He then studied at Clarkson University. In 1957, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He received his master's degree in chemical engineering in 1958. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering in 1961.

A Career in Science and Defense

After finishing his education, Delaney worked at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Washington, D.C. This was from 1961 to 1962. He then spent a year in Berlin, Germany. There, he was a research fellow at the Fritz Haber Institute of the MPG.

In 1963, he joined The Aerospace Corporation in Los Angeles. He worked there until 1968. He was a director for propulsion technology and missile studies. Next, he worked for Martin Marietta from 1968 to 1975. He managed advanced programs and Navy systems. From 1975 to 1981, he was a director for R&D Associates. He then worked for SAIC from 1981 to 1989. He managed military sciences and information systems. After that, he was a managing partner at Montgomery & Associates. He also worked in Europe for Braddock Dunn & McDonald and IABG. In 1997, he started his own company, the Delaney Group Inc.

Serving the Air Force

In 1999, President of the United States Bill Clinton chose Delaney for a big job. He became the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition. This means he helped decide what new equipment and technology the Air Force would buy. He held this important position until 2001.

In 2001, he also served as the Acting United States Under Secretary of the Air Force. For a few months, from January 21 to May 31, 2001, he was the Acting United States Secretary of the Air Force. This made him the temporary head of the entire Air Force.

After leaving government service in 2001, Delaney continued his career in business. He became the president and CEO of Arete Associates. In 2003, he joined L-3 Communications / Titan Corp., where he also served as president and CEO.
