Laxdale (which is Lacasdal in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village located in the beautiful Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It sits on the northern part of the Isle of Lewis, which is the largest island in the Outer Hebrides chain. Even though it's officially a separate village, Laxdale is now very much like a neighbourhood or "suburb" of Stornoway, the main town on the Isle of Lewis. This means it's very close to Stornoway and shares many services and facilities with the town. Laxdale is also part of the Stornoway parish, which is a local area for things like church and community activities.

What is Laxdale Like?

Laxdale is a quiet place with its own local school, called Laxdale School. This school helps educate the children living in the village and nearby areas. The village is also known for the Abhainn Lacasdail, which means Laxdale River. This river flows along the northern edge of the village, adding to the natural scenery.

Getting Around Laxdale

A main road, the A857, runs right through Laxdale. This road is important because it connects Stornoway, the biggest town on the island, to other places further north. If you travel along the A857 from Laxdale, you can reach places like Port of Ness, which is at the very northern tip of the Isle of Lewis. This road helps people travel for work, school, or just to explore the island.

Where is Laxdale?

Laxdale is part of the Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles. This is a chain of islands off the west coast of mainland Scotland. The islands are famous for their stunning landscapes, including sandy beaches, rugged coastlines, and unique wildlife. The Isle of Lewis, where Laxdale is found, is connected to the Isle of Harris, forming one large island.

The Isle of Lewis

The Isle of Lewis is the northern part of the largest island in the Outer Hebrides. It has a rich history and culture, with many people speaking Scottish Gaelic, the traditional language of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Stornoway, the main town, is a hub for the island, offering shops, services, and a ferry link to the Scottish mainland. Being so close to Stornoway means that residents of Laxdale have easy access to all these facilities.
