Where is LeRoy Township?
LeRoy Township is in the eastern part of Lake County. It shares borders with several other townships:
- Perry Township to the north
- Madison Township to the northeast
- Thompson Township in Geauga County to the east
- Montville Township in Geauga County to the southeast
- Hambden Township in Geauga County to the south
- Concord Township to the west
- Painesville Township to the northwest
There are no big cities or towns located inside LeRoy Township itself.
Land and Water Features
The total area of LeRoy Township is about 66.1 square kilometers (25.5 square miles). Most of this area, about 65.8 square kilometers (25.4 square miles), is land. A small part, about 0.3 square kilometers (0.1 square miles), is water. The Grand River forms the northern edge of the township.
History of LeRoy Township
LeRoy Township got its name from Le Roy, New York. Many of the first people who settled here came from that town. It is the only township named LeRoy in the entire state of Ohio. You might see its name spelled "Leroy" or "Le Roy."
Early Settlers and Establishment
The very first settlers in this area were Paul and Elijah Clapp. They arrived in 1802. LeRoy Township was officially created in 1820. However, it didn't become part of Lake County until 1840.
LeRoy Township During the Civil War
During the Civil War, many people from LeRoy Township helped out. Forty men from the township joined the Union Army to fight.
Earthquake in 1986
In January 1986, an earthquake happened in northeastern Ohio. The earthquake's center was in the southwestern part of LeRoy Township.
