History of Leadership Square
How Leadership Square Was Planned
In the 1960s, a big plan called the "Pei Plan" was made for Oklahoma City. This plan suggested tearing down old buildings. Then, new commercial buildings would be built in the downtown area. Leadership Square now stands where some of these old buildings once were.
The first idea for this site was a very tall office tower, possibly over 60 stories high. However, a major bank in the area, Penn Square Bank, had problems in 1982. Also, the oil market became weaker. These issues made people worry about finding enough businesses to rent space. So, the building's design had to be made smaller.
Building and Early Ownership
The Leadership Square complex was completed in 1984. At that time, it was owned by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The total cost to build it was $94 million. This was the most money ever spent on a building in Oklahoma City up to that point.
Leadership Square partly replaced an older seven-story building. After it opened, the value and number of tenants were affected. This was due to a big drop in oil prices in the mid-1980s.
Changes in Ownership Over Time
In April 2000, MetLife sold Leadership Square. It was bought by LSQ Investors, a company connected to Dorchester Capital. This sale meant the building was now owned by a local company.
In May 2005, Oliver Investments bought Leadership Square for $61 million. At this time, the building was valued at $77 million. Newmark Grubb Levy Strange Beffort helped with this sale. They also took over managing the building.
Features of Leadership Square
Leadership Square is a very large building. It has 782,315 square feet of space. About 735,000 square feet can be rented by businesses. A four-story open area, called an atrium, connects the two towers.
The complex sits on a 2.24-acre piece of land in downtown Oklahoma City. It also has a two-level parking garage. This garage can hold 340 cars. There is also a direct connection to the Oklahoma City Underground green tunnel system.
On the east side of the building, there is a large sculpture. It is called "Galaxy" and was made by Alexander Liberman. This sculpture is very big, weighing 14 tons and standing 45 feet tall. It was put in place in 1985.
Architecture and Design
Leadership Square was built using a style called International Style Modernist. This means it has a classic look with lots of glass and steel.
The building uses special glass technology called PPG solarban glass. This glass helps to block heat from the sun. This keeps the inside of the building cooler.

Events at Leadership Square
Little Willie's Triple Dog Dare
Since 2012, Leadership Square has hosted an event called "Little Willie's Triple Dog Dare." This is a tower running race. Participants run up and down 138 flights of stairs. They run in both Leadership Square towers and the nearby 31-story Oklahoma Tower.
The race organizers say it's special because it's one of the only tower running races where people run both up and down stairs. There are different groups for the race. These include individuals, teams, and firefighters who run in their full gear. There's even a "Triple Dog Squared" option where runners do twice the flights. Money raised from this event goes to local charities.
OKC Over the Edge
In 2017, Leadership Square was part of the "OKC Over the Edge" event. This was a fundraising event for Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. For this event, people rappelled, or climbed down with ropes, from the top of Two Leadership Square.
