Early Life and Music Start
Leah Flanagan is an Indigenous Australian artist. Her family comes from the Alyawarre people.
She studied classical music at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. This helped her learn a lot about music.
Leah's Music Journey
Leah has released several albums and traveled across Australia with her music. She has also performed with famous artists like Sinéad O'Connor, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Paul Kelly. She even recorded a song with Marlon Williams called "I've Lied," which was originally by Archie Roach.
From 2009 to 2011, Leah performed with a group called The Black Arm Band. They put on shows like Murundak and Dirtsong at big festivals. She even performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver!
In 2010, Leah was part of a special show at the Melbourne Festival called Seven Songs To Leave Behind. She performed with other great musicians like John Cale and Gurrumul.
Leah was also invited by Deborah Conway to join her Song Trails project. This project involved working with other Australian artists like Robert Forster. They gave workshops and performed concerts in different parts of Queensland.
In 2011, Leah created a show called Midnight Muses for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. It was based on poems by Samuel Wagan Watson. The show was also performed at the Sydney Festival in 2013.
Leah was a featured singer in the first Australian show of Leonard Bernstein's MASS at the 2012 Adelaide Festival.
In 2015, Archie Roach asked Leah to record his song "I've Lied" with Marlon Williams. This was for the 25th anniversary of Archie's album Charcoal Lane. Rolling Stone Australia magazine gave the album a great review!
In 2017, Leah was part of a show called 1967: Music in the Key of Yes at the Sydney Festival. This show celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Australian referendum through music.
Leading in the Arts
Leah also works to support other musicians. In 2019, she became the national manager for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Music Office at APRA AMCOS. This group helps protect the rights of musicians and songwriters.
In 2020, Leah became the First Nations export producer at Sounds Australia. In this role, she helps Indigenous artists share their music with the world. She attends big international events like SXSW and WOMEX. She also helps create programs to support Indigenous artists who want to perform overseas.
TV Appearances
You might have seen Leah on TV! She has appeared on Australian music quiz shows like Spicks & Specks and RocKwiz. On RocKwiz, she sang "Shipbuilding" with composer David Bridie.
She also performed a version of Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life" on the sports show Marngrook Footy Show.
