Lee is a small village located in Illinois, United States. It sits partly in DeKalb County and partly in Lee County. In 2020, about 313 people lived there.

Exploring Lee's Location and Size
Lee is found right on the edge of DeKalb and Lee counties. You can find its exact spot at 41°47′39″N 88°56′27″W / 41.79417°N 88.94083°W. The main street in the village, called Viking Vie, actually runs along the county line! Lee is about 15 miles southeast of Rochelle and 17 miles southwest of DeKalb.
The village of Lee covers a total area of about 0.20 square miles (0.51 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
Understanding Lee's Waterways
What's special about Lee is that the land around it is part of four different watersheds. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or lake.
- To the northwest, water flows into the Rock River.
- To the northeast, water goes into the Kishwaukee River.
- To the southwest, water drains into the Green River.
- To the southeast, water flows into the Fox River.
Lee's Rich History and Culture
Lee is well-known for its strong connections to Norwegian American culture. In fact, all the streets in the village have Norwegian names!
In 1974, the town celebrated its 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, a contest was held to rename the streets. Mary Ellen Prestegaard won the contest. She owned a shop in the village called the Hardanger Hus, which sold Norwegian gifts. Many of the first people who settled in Lee came from the Hardanger region of Norway. Even today, many people in the community can trace their family history back to that area.
