Lidio John Fogolin, Sr. (born February 27, 1926, in Fort William, Ontario, and passed away on November 29, 2000) was a professional ice hockey player from Canada. He played as a defenceman for famous teams like the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Black Hawks in the NHL.

Lee Fogolin's Pro Hockey Career

Lee Fogolin began his professional hockey journey in 1946 with the Omaha Knights. The very next year, he played for the Indianapolis Capitals. He got his first chance to play in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1948 playoffs.

He started the 1949 season with Indianapolis before joining the NHL full-time. Lee played three more seasons with the Detroit team. He even won the famous Stanley Cup with them in 1950!

In 1951, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks. This trade also involved Steve Black moving to Chicago, while Bert Olmstead and Vic Stasiuk went to Detroit. Lee played his final six years as a player with the Chicago Black Hawks.

In 1957, he signed on to be a player-coach for the Calgary Stampeders. They were part of the WHL. During that season, he broke his elbow. After that injury, he decided to stop playing and focus only on coaching.

Coaching Days

Lee Fogolin coached for one season in the WHL in 1957. He took a break from coaching for a while. He did not return to coaching until 1971. At that time, he coached the Thunder Bay Twins in the USHL for two seasons.

  • Lee Fogolin Sr. was chosen to play in two NHL All-Star Games. These special games happened in 1950 and 1951.
  • His son, Lee Fogolin Jr., also became a hockey player. Lee Fogolin Jr. won two Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers in 1984 and 1985.
  • Lee Fogolin Sr.'s grandson, Michael Fogolin, played for the Prince George Cougars. This team is also in the WHL. Sadly, Michael passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2004. Doctors thought it might have been due to a heart condition.
