Lidio John Fogolin Sr. (born February 27, 1927 – died November 29, 2000) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played as a defenceman (a player who defends their team's goal) for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played in the NHL from 1948 to 1956.
Playing Hockey: Lidio Fogolin's Career
Lidio Fogolin began his professional hockey journey in 1946. He first played for the Omaha Knights in the United States Hockey League. The next year, he joined the Indianapolis Capitals in the American Hockey League.
Fogolin got his first chance to play in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1948 playoffs. He started the 1949 season with Indianapolis but was soon called up to play for the Red Wings full-time.
He played three seasons with Detroit. During this time, he helped the team win the famous Stanley Cup in 1950! In 1951, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks. He moved with another player, Steve Black, in exchange for Bert Olmstead and Vic Stasiuk.
Lidio Fogolin spent the last six years of his playing career with the Chicago Black Hawks. In 1957, he became a player-coach for the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Hockey League (WHL). However, he broke his elbow that season. After this injury, he decided to retire from playing and focus only on coaching.
Coaching Hockey: Lidio Fogolin's Coaching Years
After his playing career, Fogolin coached for one season in the WHL in 1957. He took a break from coaching for many years.
He returned to coaching in 1971. He coached the Thunder Bay Twins in the United States Hockey League for three seasons.
Lidio Fogolin's Personal Life and Family
Lidio Fogolin was a talented player. He was chosen to play in two NHL All-Star Games, once in 1950 and again in 1951.
His son, Lee Fogolin, also became a successful ice hockey player. Lee won the Stanley Cup twice with the Edmonton Oilers, in 1984 and 1985.
Lidio's grandson, Michael Fogolin, also played hockey for the Prince George Cougars in the WHL. Sadly, Michael passed away in 2004 due to a possible heart condition.
