Legacy West is a cool, modern area in Plano, Texas. It's a place where businesses, shops, restaurants, and homes all come together. This large district is surrounded by major roads like Legacy Drive, Headquarters Drive, the Sam Rayburn Tollway, and the Dallas North Tollway.

It has lots of different spaces. You can find 415,000 square feet of stores, places to eat, and offices. There's also a huge food hall, which is like a big indoor market with many food stalls, covering 55,000 square feet. Plus, there are over 1,300 homes and a large 303-room Renaissance Hotel.

How Legacy West Was Built

Planning the Project

Back in 2011, a company called JCPenney owned a big piece of land in Plano. This land, about 240 acres, had been empty since JCPenney moved its main office there in 1987. JCPenney asked different companies for ideas on how to develop this empty space.

In 2014, JCPenney made a deal with three local real estate companies: Karahan Companies, KDC, and Columbus Realty Partners. They decided to build a fancy hotel, office buildings for companies, a shopping area, and apartments.

Starting Construction

Construction began later in 2014. The plans got even bigger when Toyota announced it would move its North American main office to Legacy West. Toyota was moving from California, so developers sped up the building plans.

Toyota started building its new $350 million, 100-acre office in January 2015. The next month, the developers began the first part of the $2 billion Legacy West project. For the next two years, they worked on offices, homes, stores, and restaurants.

Grand Opening Day

On June 2, 2017, the shopping area of Legacy West officially opened to everyone. Important people like Secretary of State of Texas Rolando Pablos, Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, and developer Fehmi Karahan helped celebrate the grand opening.

Even after the opening, building continued. In late 2017, they kept working on places like Legacy Hall. This is a three-story food hall with more than two dozen food stalls. It features food from famous chefs and even has a brewery called Unlawful Assembly Brewing Company.

Major Companies at Legacy West

Legacy West is home to the main offices of several big companies. These include JCPenney, FedEx Office, NTT Data Systems, and Fogo de Chão. It's also where Toyota Motor Corporation has its North American headquarters. Big financial companies like JPMorgan Chase and Liberty Mutual Insurance have regional offices here too.

The area also includes the tall, 15-story Renaissance Dallas at Plano Legacy West Hotel, which has 303 rooms.

The Shops at Legacy: A Nearby Area

Just to the east of Legacy West, across the Dallas North Tollway, is another shopping area called The Shops at Legacy. It opened earlier, in 2002, and has 33 stores. It's located near the main offices of Alliance Data and LegacyTexas Bank.

The Shops at Legacy also has a fancy Marriot hotel called the Dallas/Plano Marriott at Legacy Town Center. This hotel overlooks Bishop Park. The North American headquarters for Hilti is also located here.

Historic Cemetery

Right in the center of The Shops at Legacy, you'll find the Baccus Cemetery. This is the oldest cemetery in Plano, dating back to about 1847. It's where Captain Henry Cook buried his son, Daniel Cook, who was a soldier from the War of 1812. The Baccus Cemetery is one of Plano's most historic places.

Some of the stores you can find at The Shops at Legacy include Benefit Cosmetics, bluemercury, Elaine Turner, Kendra Scott, lululemon athletica, and Urban Outfitters.
