Early Encounters
In the past, there were some difficult times between settlers and Native Americans in the area. In March 1780, two men, John Rogers and Asa Upson, were making sugar near Hunlock Creek. They were captured by Native Americans. Sadly, Upson was killed, and Rogers was taken away.
Later, the Native Americans went to where Abram Pike was also making sugar. They captured Pike and his wife. The next day, they moved towards the Village of Orange. There, they captured Moses Van Campen, his father, and Peter Pence. Moses's father was killed during this time.
The prisoners were taken to Wysox Creek. John Rogers bravely managed to get a knife from one of the Native Americans. He used it to free himself and the other prisoners. They then fought their captors. Some Native Americans were killed, while others managed to escape.
