Leicester King was an important person in Ohio during the 1800s. He was born in Suffield, Connecticut, on May 1, 1789. King was a businessman, a judge, and a state senator. He is best known for fighting against slavery. He passed away on September 19, 1856.

Early Life and Career
Leicester King moved to Warren, Ohio, in 1817 with his wife, Julia Ann Huntington. For many years, he worked as a merchant. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. He did this until 1833.
After his time as a merchant, King helped build the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. This was a big project to create waterways for boats to carry goods. Later, he became a judge for Trumbull County. He served on the Court of Common Pleas.
A Voice for Freedom
King strongly believed that slavery was wrong. He was known as an abolitionist, which means he wanted to end slavery completely.
In 1835, King was elected to the Ohio Senate. This is part of the state government that makes laws. He served two terms, until 1839.
He was first a member of the Whig Party. This was a major political group at the time. In 1842, he joined the Liberty Party. This party was formed specifically to oppose slavery.
King ran for Ohio Governor in 1842 and 1844 as the Liberty Party candidate. He was also nominated to be Vice President in the 1848 United States Presidential Election. However, he chose not to accept the nomination.
Later Life
Leicester King died on September 19, 1856. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio.
