Lemon Stream is a beautiful stream in Maine, USA. It is about 15.2-mile-long (24.5 km), which is like walking for several hours! This stream is a tributary of the Sandy River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. So, Lemon Stream flows into the Sandy River.

The Sandy River then flows into the Kennebec River. This means Lemon Stream is part of the larger Kennebec River system. It starts in the New Vineyard mountain range in Franklin County, Maine.

Where Lemon Stream Begins

Lemon Stream starts from a spring high up in the mountains. A spring is where water naturally flows out of the ground. This spring is located 1,460 feet (450 m) above sea level. That's higher than many tall buildings! It is found between two mountains called Little Mountain and Caswell Mountain.

Its Journey Through Maine

From its source, Lemon Stream flows towards the southeast. It crosses the northeast part of a town called Industry. Then, it enters Somerset County through the southwest corner of Anson. Finally, it meets the larger Sandy River. The Sandy River forms the southern edge of a town called Starks.

It's important not to confuse Lemon Stream with another stream of the same name. There's a different, darker stream in New Portland, Maine that flows north.

The Stream's Path

Lemon Stream begins in wet areas high up on the slopes of the New Vineyard mountains. As it flows, it tumbles over many small waterfalls. These falls lead it into the open fields of the upper Lemon Stream valley.

Through Woodlands and Farmland

The stream then moves south through forests filled with sugar maple trees. It enters the lower Lemon Stream valley. Here, the stream gets wider and slows down. This happens because of a small hydroelectric dam in Starks. A hydroelectric dam uses the power of flowing water to make electricity.

Below the dam, Lemon Stream continues its winding path south. It flows through more woods and farmland. Eventually, its sandy mouth meets the eastward-flowing Sandy River. The "mouth" of a river or stream is where it empties into another body of water.
