Osie Leon Wood III, born on March 25, 1962, is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was a top college player, known as an All-American. Leon was chosen early in the NBA draft. He also won gold medals at the Olympics and the Pan American Games. After playing, he became an official referee in the NBA.

Starting Strong in College
Leon Wood was a talented point guard. He stood 6 feet 3 inches tall. He played basketball at Saint Monica Catholic High School. Later, he became an All-American at California State University-Fullerton. This means he was one of the best college players in the country.
Playing in the NBA
In 1984, Leon was picked by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the 10th player chosen in the first round of the 1984 NBA draft. He played for six different teams in the NBA. These teams included the 76ers, Washington Bullets, New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, and Sacramento Kings.
Leon played in 274 NBA games. He scored a total of 1,742 points. That's about 6.4 points per game. In 1987, he took part in the very first NBA 3-point shootout. This event happened during the All-Star Weekend in Dallas.
Playing Around the World
After his time in the NBA, Leon also played basketball in other countries. He played in Germany for MTV 1846 Giessen. He also played for CAI Zaragoza in Spain. Leon spent four seasons in the Continental Basketball Association. There, he averaged 18.1 points and 8.5 assists per game. He was even named second-team All-CBA in 1990. His last professional basketball games were in the Philippine Basketball Association in 1994. He helped his team, Purefoods, reach the semifinals.
Olympic Gold Medalist
Leon Wood is a two-time gold medalist in international basketball. He won his first gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. The second gold medal came as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team. This team was coached by the famous Bobby Knight. Leon was a key player, leading the 1984 Olympic team with 7.9 assists per game.
Becoming an NBA Referee
After his playing career ended, Leon Wood found another way to stay involved in basketball. In 1996, he became an official referee in the NBA. This means he helps make sure the games are played fairly and by the rules.
