Leonard Garvey Pitts Jr. (born October 11, 1957) is an American writer. He is known for his work as a journalist, a columnist, and a novelist. He writes columns that are shared across many newspapers in the country. He also won a special award called the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2004.
Pitts first worked for the Miami Herald newspaper. He started by writing about music. Soon, he got his own column. In his column, he often writes about important topics. These include how different groups of people live together, how the government works, and different cultures. He writes from a viewpoint that supports social progress and fairness.

His Famous Column from 9/11
One of Pitts' most well-known writings is a column from September 12, 2001. It was titled "We'll go forward from this moment." In this column, he wrote about the strength of the American people. He wrote it after the sad events of the September 11 attacks. This column was shared widely across the country.
