Leonardo Cimino (born November 4, 1917 – died March 3, 2012) was an American actor. He worked in movies, on TV, and on stage. In 1937, he was part of the first play called The Cradle Will Rock.
Cimino is best known for two roles. He played Abraham Bernstein in the 1983 science fiction TV show V. He was also the "Scary German Guy" in the 1987 movie The Monster Squad.

Early Life and Acting Journey
Leonardo Cimino was born in Manhattan, New York City. His father was a tailor. When he was a teenager, Leonardo first wanted to be a violinist. He studied the violin at the famous Juilliard School.
While learning violin, he also became interested in acting and dancing. So, he started studying those too. In 1936, at 18, he got his first acting job on stage. This was in a play called Middle Man in Suffern, New York.
Training and Dedication
Leonardo didn't become a full-time actor right away. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, he kept learning. He studied acting, directing, and modern dance at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
Serving in World War II
When World War II started, Cimino joined the United States Army in 1942. He was part of a very important event. He landed in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. This was during the second wave of the invasion of Normandy.
Return to Acting and Stage Success
After the war, Leonardo came back to the United States in 1945. He continued to study performing arts. He even learned dance from the famous dancer Martha Graham.
Broadway and Awards
In 1946, he made his first appearance on Broadway. This was in a play called Cyrano de Bergerac. He worked with the actor and director José Ferrer on many projects after that. Over the next 40 years, Cimino acted in almost 20 Broadway shows. These included Passage to India in 1962 and The Iceman Cometh in 1985.
In 1976, he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. This was for his role as Jim in the play A Memory of Two Mondays.
Off-Broadway and Regional Theatre
Cimino also performed in many Off-Broadway plays. In 1958, he won an Obie Award for his role in The Brothers Karamazov. He often acted in Shakespeare plays at the Public Theater. For example, he played Egeon in The Comedy of Errors in 1975. He acted alongside stars like Ted Danson and Danny DeVito in that play.
He also performed in theatres across the United States. In 1970, he won the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor. This was for his performance in The Man in the Glass Booth in Chicago.
Television Appearances
Leonardo Cimino made many guest appearances on popular TV shows. These included Naked City, Kojak, The Equalizer, and Law & Order. From 1981 to 1982, he played Alexei Vartova on the soap opera Ryan's Hope.
Later Years and Legacy
Leonardo Cimino passed away on March 3, 2012. He was at his home in Woodstock, New York. He was 94 years old. His long career showed his dedication to acting on stage, in movies, and on television.
