Leonor Lasso de la Vega (born before 1367 – died 1432) was an important noblewoman from Cantabria, a region in Spain. She became the leader of the powerful House of Lasso de la Vega in 1367. She held this important position until her death in 1432. Her family was very influential in the Kingdom of Castile.
Family Background
Leonor came from a very important family. Her great-grandfather was Garci Lasso de la Vega I. He was a high-ranking official called a chancellor for the King of Castile. Her grandfather was Garci Lasso de la Vega II. He was also a top royal official for Prince Fadrique Alfonso. Leonor's father was Garci Lasso Ruiz de la Vega. He served King Henry II of Castile for many years. He died in a battle in 1367. After his death, Leonor became the head of her family.
Her Life
Leonor was a generous supporter of the Monasterio de Santa Clara de Castrojeríz. This monastery was founded by her grandparents, Garci Lasso de la Vega II and Leonor González de Cornado. She helped the monastery throughout her life.
Marriages and Children
Leonor married twice. Her first husband was Juan Téllez de Castilla. He was the lord of Aguilar de Campoo and Castañeda. Juan was the grandson of King Alfonso XI of Castile.
With Juan, Leonor had one child:
- Aldonza Téllez de Castilla y de la Vega (born 1382 – died 1449). She married Garci IV Fernández Manrique de Lara. They became the first Counts of Castañeda. Their children later founded other important noble houses.
Juan died in 1385 during the Battle of Aljubarrota. Two years later, in 1387, Leonor married again. Her second husband was Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. He was a high admiral of Castile.
When Leonor married Diego, she brought with her the town of Carrión de los Condes and a manor in Asturias de Santillana.
With Diego, Leonor had several children:
- García Lasso de la Vega. He later changed his name to Juan Hurtado de Mendoza.
- Elvira Laso de Mendoza. She married Gómez I Suárez de Figueroa. Their son became the first Count of Feria.
- Íñigo López de Mendoza, 1st Marquis of Santillana. He became a very powerful noble. He founded the important Dukedom of the Infantado. He was also the first Marquis of Santillana.
- Gonzalo Ruiz de Mendoza. He inherited lands in Tierra de Campos and Vega from his grandmother.
- Teresa de la Vega y Mendoza. She married Álvaro Carrillo de Albornoz.
Her Legacy
In 1432, Leonor gave her children Íñigo, Gonzalo, and Elvira the power to write her last will. In this will, her daughter Aldonza from her first marriage was disinherited.
After Leonor's death, all her lands and titles went to the House of Mendoza. This happened through her son, Íñigo López de Mendoza. In 1445, King John II of Castile confirmed this. He gave Íñigo the title of Marquis of Santillana. This made Santillana del Mar the center of the lordship of Torrelavega in Cantabria.
The family name "Lasso de la Vega" continued through Leonor's family line. This name is linked to famous soldiers, poets, and writers from Spain's Golden Age. Two well-known figures are Garcilaso de la Vega, a soldier and poet, and Inca Garcilaso, a historian from Peru.
