Santillana del Mar is a beautiful old town in Cantabria, Spain. It's famous for its many historic buildings that attract thousands of visitors every year.
You might hear people say Santillana del Mar is The Town of Three Lies. This is because its name seems to suggest it's a Saint (Santo), flat (llana), and by the sea (Mar). But it's none of these! The name actually comes from Santa Juliana (also called Santa Illana). Her remains are kept in the Colegiata, which is an old Romanesque church and was once a monastery. Close by, you can find the Cave of Altamira, a World Heritage Site known for its amazing ancient cave paintings.
