Leopold is a small community in Perry County, Indiana. It is considered an unincorporated community, which means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. It's also a Census-designated place, which is an area the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data.
Leopold has a population of less than 100 people. It is home to a Roman Catholic church called St. Augustine. You can also find a general store, Guillaume's Store, and a restaurant named Marcy's. Every year, on the last Sunday in July, Leopold hosts its special St. Augustine's picnic. This event helps raise money for the local church and is a fun way for people who used to live there to come back and visit.
History of Leopold, Indiana
Leopold was started in 1842 by a priest named Reverend Augustine Bessonies. He named the community after the king of Belgium at that time, Leopold I.
A post office served the community of Leopold for many years. It was open from 1846 until August 12, 2017.
Who Settled Leopold?
Most of the first people who settled in Leopold were Belgian immigrants. These settlers came from the southern part of Belgium, which spoke French. This area was once part of Luxembourg. They decided to move to America from cities near the Meuse River, close to France. They left Belgium in the 1830s because the country was then under Protestant rule.
The land and weather in Perry County, Indiana, were very similar to their home country. This made it easier for them to adjust to their new lives. Since this was a new frontier, immigrants had to promise loyalty to the United States. They had to sign an oath saying they would no longer be loyal to King Leopold.
Geography of Leopold
Leopold is located about fifteen miles north of the Ohio River. The Ohio River is a major river in the United States.
