Linanthus grandiflorus

The Leptosiphon grandiflorus is a beautiful flowering plant. People also call it the large-flower linanthus or large flowered leptosiphon. It belongs to the phlox family, which includes many colorful garden flowers.

Where Does This Flower Grow?

This special plant only grows in California. You can find it in the California Coast Ranges. It lives especially near the Central Coast and the San Francisco Bay Area.

It likes to grow in different natural areas. These include chaparral (a type of shrubland) and coastal grasslands. It also grows in oak forests. It usually grows in places lower than 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) (about 3,900 feet) high.

The Leptosiphon grandiflorus is a plant that needs our help. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the IUCN say it is a Vulnerable species. This means it is at risk of disappearing.

It is also on the California Native Plant Society list of rare plants. We are not sure exactly how many of these plants are left. This is because some places where it used to grow no longer have them.

What Does It Look Like?

The Leptosiphon grandiflorus is an annual herb. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, and then dies in one year. It has a stem that feels a bit hairy.

Its leaves are divided into thin, long parts. These parts can be up to 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) long.

At the top of the stem, you will find a few flowers. They grow in a loose group. Each flower is shaped like a funnel. They can be white or a light pink color. The flower petals can be up to 1.5 centimeters (about 0.6 inches) long. This plant blooms from April to July.
