Leron "Boogie" Black (born January 31, 1996) is an American former professional basketball player. He is now an assistant coach for the Rip City Remix team in the NBA G League. Leron Black played college basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

High School Basketball Journey
Leron Black was a talented basketball player in high school. In September 2012, he first said he would play for Baylor University. However, he changed his mind in January 2013. He explained that he had committed too early without looking at all his choices.
Black considered many top schools, including UConn, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Memphis, and Ohio State.
Joining the Illinois Fighting Illini
After visiting Illinois, Black decided to commit to their basketball program on September 1, 2013. He officially signed to play for Illinois for the 2014–15 season. During his final year at White Station, he was amazing! He scored about 20 points and grabbed nearly 13 rebounds per game. He helped his team achieve an impressive 30 wins and only 3 losses.
For his great performance, Leron Black received several awards. He was named Tennessee Mr. Basketball Class AAA for 2014. He also won the Gatorade Tennessee Boys Basketball Player of the Year award for 2014. Plus, USA Today named him to their First Team All-State list.
College Playing Career
Leron Black made a big impact in his first college game as a starter. On January 21, 2015, he played against Purdue. He scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds, which is called a double-double. This was a special achievement because he was the first Illinois player in a long time to get a double-double in his very first start.
Overcoming Injuries
In October 2015, Leron had to have surgery on his knee for a meniscus tear. This meant he would miss about 4 to 6 weeks of playing time. But he worked hard and returned to the team in November 2015.
After the 2017–18 season, Leron Black was recognized for his skills. He was named to the honorable mention All Big-10 team. This means he was one of the top players in his conference, as chosen by both coaches and sports reporters.
College Statistics Overview
During his time at Illinois, Leron Black improved a lot. He played 102 games and started in 70 of them. He averaged about 9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over his college career. His best season was 2017–18, where he averaged 15.3 points per game.
Professional Playing Career
After his college career, Leron Black decided to become a professional basketball player. He announced this on March 15, 2018. Even though he wasn't chosen in the 2018 NBA draft, he still pursued his dream.
Playing Around the World
Leron Black signed with a team in Israel called Elitzur Yavne in August 2018. However, he left the team before playing any games. Later, in October 2018, he was picked by the Raptors 905 in the 2018 NBA G League Draft. But he was waived from their training camp shortly after.
He then moved to Argentina and signed with Argentino de Junín in November 2018. In July 2019, he joined Flamengo in Brazil. He also played for Minas in Brazil and Abejas de León in Mexico. In April 2021, he re-signed with Team Cali in Colombia. Leron Black's professional career took him to many different countries!
The Basketball Tournament
In 2020, Leron Black joined a team called House of 'Paign. This team was made up mostly of former Illinois college players. He played in The Basketball Tournament 2020 and helped his team win their first game.
Representing His Country
In May 2014, Leron Black was invited to a special training camp for USA Basketball. This camp was for players who might join the team for the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. It was a great honor to be considered for the national team!
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Leron Black started coaching. In 2021, he became a graduate assistant for the Dayton Flyers college team. He later became their video coordinator in 2023.
In October 2023, Leron Black joined the Rip City Remix of the NBA G League as an assistant coach and director of video. He was promoted to an assistant coach for the team the following season.
