Letcher is a town in Sanborn County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 159 at the 2020 census.

Letcher has the name of O. T. Letcher, a local landowner.

Geography

Letcher is located at 43°53′52″N 98°8′22″W / 43.89778°N 98.13944°W / 43.89778; -98.13944 (43.897780, -98.139366).

As of the census of 2010, there were 173 people, 77 households, and 42 families residing in the town. The population density was 279.0 inhabitants per square mile (107.7/km2). There were 83 housing units at an average density of 133.9 per square mile (51.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 100.0% White.

There were 77 households, of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.5% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 3.07.

The median age in the town was 38.6 years. 23.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.4% were from 25 to 44; 30% were from 45 to 64; and 12.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 51.4% male and 48.6% female.

Education

Letcher Public Schools are part of the Sanborn Central School District. The district includes an elementary school, middle school and high school. Students attend Sanborn Central High School.
