Leuna is a town located in eastern Germany, in a region called Saxony-Anhalt. It sits near the cities of Merseburg and Halle, right by the Saale River.
Leuna is famous for its huge industrial area, known as the Leunawerke. This area is about 13 square kilometers, making it one of the largest places in Germany where many different chemicals and plastics are made.
In 1960, almost 10,000 people lived in Leuna. After Germany became one country again, many people moved away. This was because there were fewer jobs and the air quality was not very good due to nearby factories. Before December 31, 2009, when ten nearby towns joined Leuna, its population had gone down to 6,670 people.
