Leurbost (which is Liùrbost in Scottish Gaelic) is a friendly village located on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis. This island is part of the Outer Hebrides in beautiful Scotland.

Leurbost is about 6 kilometers (or 6 miles) south of Stornoway. You'll find it on the road that leads to Harris. It's the main village in an area of the island known as North Lochs. Leurbost is also part of the Lochs parish.

More than 500 people live in Leurbost. People here speak both English and Scottish Gaelic. The local football team is called Lochs FC. Their home pitch, Creagan Dubh, is also famous for serving delicious pies!

Local Legends: The Sea-Serpent of Leurbost

In 1856, some exciting stories spread around Leurbost. People reported seeing a strange "sea-serpent" in a freshwater loch near the village. This creature was called Searrach Uisge.

It was described as being like a giant eel, about 40 feet long! Some people even compared it to the mythical Kelpie, a water spirit from Scottish folklore. Imagine seeing something like that in a loch!

Life in Leurbost: Community and Education

Leurbost has many useful places for its residents. The village has a modern community centre where people can gather. There's also a school called Sgoil nan Loch.

This school is quite special because it replaced several older schools from nearby areas. These included the old Leurbost school, Fidigarry, Knockiandue, and Balallan schools. Sgoil nan Loch welcomes children from nursery age all the way through primary school (Primary 1 to 7).

For everyday needs, Leurbost also has a petrol station and a local shop. These places help make life in the village convenient for everyone.
