Lev Anatolevich Vladimirsky (Russian: Лев Анатольевич Владимирский; born September 27, 1903 – died September 7, 1973) was a brave Soviet naval officer. He became an Admiral in 1954, which is a very high rank in the navy.

Lev Vladimirsky joined the army as a volunteer in 1919 during a time of civil war. He helped keep peace in a region called Turkestan. In 1921, he decided to join the navy instead.

Early Life and Naval Training

Lev Vladimirsky studied at important naval schools. He graduated from the Naval Command School in 1925. Later, he took special courses for officers in 1927. He also attended the Military Academy of General Staff in 1952. These schools helped him become a skilled leader.

A Career at Sea

Vladimirsky served on ships in the Black Sea and Azov Sea. He worked as a navigator, helping ships find their way. He was also a watch chief, an artilleryman, and a senior deputy commander on a destroyer.

From 1932, he started commanding his own ships. He led different types of vessels, including destroyer escorts, destroyers, and destroyer leaders. By 1937, he was a chief of staff for a group of cruisers.

In 1938, he helped deliver supplies on a French ship called Bonifacio. These supplies went to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Later that year, he led a group of hydrographic vessels. These special ships map out oceans and seas. He guided them on a very long journey from the Baltic Sea all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

World War II Hero

In June 1939, Vladimirsky took command of a squadron in the Black Sea Fleet. When World War II began, his squadron played a big part in defending important cities. They fought bravely during the defense of Odesa and the defense of Sevastopol.

In September 1941, he led an amphibious landing operation. This is when soldiers land on shore from ships. From May 1943, Vladimirsky became the commander of the Black Sea Fleet. He led naval forces in key landing operations, like those in Novorossiysk and Kerch-Eltigen in 1943.

In May 1944, Vladimirsky was moved to the Baltic Fleet. He took command during the Vyborg operation that same year.

Post-War Leadership and Research

After the war, Vladimirsky held many important leadership roles in the navy. In 1947, he became an Admiral-Inspector. He also oversaw naval training schools and combat training. From 1955, he was in charge of shipbuilding for the navy. Between 1956 and 1959, he led the naval scientific and technical committee. This group worked on new technologies for the navy.

From 1959, Vladimirsky focused on teaching and scientific work. He was the Deputy Chief of the Naval Academy from 1962 to 1967. He also worked as a professor-consultant there until 1970.

Starting in 1968, he led several important oceanographic expeditions. These trips explored the oceans. In 1968, he led a round-the-world expedition on a ship called Polus (Pole).

Vladimirsky retired from the navy in 1970. He passed away on September 7, 1973.
