Lewis is a unique town in Essex County, Vermont, United States. It was named after three landholders: Nathan, Sevignior, and Timothy Lewis. Even though the state officially recognized it as a town, Lewis was never truly "organized." This means it never had enough people living there permanently to set up a local government.
For most of the 1900s, Lewis had zero residents. In the 2020 census, it reported a population of 2. However, it's possible the actual population is still zero. This is because Lewis shares its census area with nearby towns. Also, new privacy rules for the 2020 census might make it seem like there are people when there aren't. Almost all the land in Lewis that isn't protected by the government is owned by a single logging company called Weyerhaeuser. The town's affairs are managed by a group called the Unified Towns & Gores Of Essex County.
