History of Lewisburg

Early Settlements and Founding

The area where Lewisburg and Marshall County are located was first settled by Native Americans. Later, in the 1780s, soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War received land here from the State of North Carolina.

Marshall County was officially created in 1836 by the Tennessee General Assembly. The county was named to honor John Marshall, who was a very important judge in the early United States. The law that created the county also said that its main town should be named Lewisburg. This was to remember the explorer Meriwether Lewis. Lewisburg became an official city in 1837. The land for the city, about 50 acres, was given for public use.

Growth and Development

Until 1925, Lewisburg was mainly a center for trading and shipping. Farmers would bring their livestock (like cows and horses) and farm products here to sell and send to other places.

Marshall County is also important because three people from the county have served as the Governor of Tennessee. These governors were Henry Horton, Jim Nance McCord, and Buford Ellington.

Today, Lewisburg and Marshall County are home to several well-known businesses. Even though some jobs have been lost recently, the area still has a strong workforce. Lewisburg is also the worldwide headquarters for the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association. This organization is dedicated to the famous Tennessee Walking Horse breed.
