Lexington Historical Society facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lexington Historical Society is a group in Lexington, Massachusetts, that helps keep the town's history alive. It was started way back in 1886. The Society especially focuses on Lexington's big role in the start of the American Revolution. They offer fun and educational programs all year long at the old Lexington Depot, which has been nicely restored.

The Society takes care of three very important historic houses. These houses are like time capsules, showing us what life was like during the American Revolution. You can take guided tours of these homes from April to October. If you want to visit at other times, you can usually set up a special appointment. A big part of what the Society does is teach students about Colonial life and the American Revolution.

Historic Houses You Can Visit

The Lexington Historical Society looks after three special houses that played a part in American history:

Hancock-Clarke House: Paul Revere's Stop

The Hancock-Clarke House was a very important place. It was the home of Reverend Jonas Clarke. On the night of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere rode here to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British soldiers were coming. This warning helped them escape before the fighting began.

Buckman Tavern: Militia Meeting Spot

Buckman Tavern was a popular meeting place in Lexington. On the morning of April 19, 1775, members of the Lexington militia gathered here. They were waiting for news about the British troops. This tavern is where many of the local soldiers met before the first shots of the American Revolution were fired on Lexington Green.

Munroe Tavern: British Headquarters

Munroe Tavern was another important building. After the battles of Lexington and Concord, British soldiers used this tavern as a temporary headquarters. They stopped here during their retreat back to Boston. It shows how the fighting spread through the area on that historic day.

Exploring Lexington's History

The main offices of the Lexington Historical Society are located at the restored Lexington Depot. You can find it at 13 Depot Square in Lexington Centre. This is where the Society works to preserve old documents and items.

The Society also has a huge collection of historical items and records. If you have questions about Lexington's past, their Archives can help. It's full of old documents, maps, photos, and books. This collection helps people learn more about the town's rich history.
