Li Kui (legalist) facts for kids
Li Kui (born 455 BC, died 395 BC) was a very smart person from ancient China. He was an engineer, a thinker, and a politician. He worked as a government minister and advisor for Marquis Wen, a powerful ruler in the state of Wei.
In 407 BC, Li Kui wrote an important book called the Book of Law. This book helped create the first official laws for the Qin and Han dynasties, which were big empires later on. His ideas also greatly influenced other famous thinkers like Shang Yang and Han Feizi. They used Li Kui's ideas to develop a way of thinking called Legalism.

Li Kui's Big Ideas
Li Kui started working for Marquis Wen of Wei even before Wei was officially recognized as a state. He became a top official in 422 BC. His job was to start new ways of running the government. Because of his work, Wei became the first of the Seven Warring States to have a government run by skilled officials, not just by rich noble families.
Li Kui had several big ideas for his reforms:
Choosing Good Leaders
- He believed that people should be chosen for government jobs based on their skills and hard work, not just because they were born into a noble family. This idea is called meritocracy. By doing this, Li Kui made the government work better and reduced the power of the nobles. For example, he suggested Ximen Bao to manage water projects and Wu Qi to lead the army.
Helping Farmers Grow Food
- He wanted the government to actively help farmers. This included sharing information about the best farming methods. The goal was to make farms produce as much food as possible. This helped make sure there was enough food for everyone.
Keeping Food Prices Fair
- He created a rule called the 'Law of Equalising Purchases'. This meant that when there was a really good harvest and lots of grain, the government would buy the extra grain. They stored it in big warehouses. This helped keep prices stable. If there was a bad harvest, the government could then sell the stored grain. This prevented prices from going too high and protected people from hunger.
Creating Clear Laws
- Li Kui wrote down all the laws of the state in his Book of Law. This made the laws clear for everyone to understand. The book had sections about different types of crimes, like theft and banditry. It also explained how people would be arrested and put in prison.
Li Kui's Lasting Impact
Li Kui's new ideas and reforms made the state of Wei very strong in the early years of the Warring States period. With a better economy, Wei won many battles. They defeated the states of Qin, Qi, and even worked with allies like Zhao and Han to fight Chu.
Li Kui's main ideas continued to inspire future thinkers. These ideas included:

- Having a government run by skilled people.
- The government playing an active role in society and the economy.
About 30 years after Li Kui passed away, Shang Yang took a copy of the Book of Law with him when he went to work for the state of Qin. This book was later used and changed to become the official legal code for the powerful Qin dynasty.
Li Kui also worked with Ximen Bao on important projects. They helped build canals and irrigation systems in the state of Wei. These projects helped bring water to farms and made the land more productive.
