Lidköping is a town in Sweden, located in Västra Götaland County. It is the main town of Lidköping Municipality. About 40,000 people lived there in 2021.

The town sits on the southern shore of Lake Vänern, which is a very large lake. To help people tell it apart from Linköping (another city), Lidköping sometimes calls itself "Lidköping by Vänern". There have been ideas to officially change its name to "Lidköping by Vänern", but this has not happened.

Exploring Lidköping's Geography

The town of Lidköping is split into two parts by the Lidan River. This river flows right through the middle of the city. The side to the east is called the old town. The side to the west is known as the new town.

Lidköping Municipality is on a peninsula called Läckö-Kinnekulle. It is next to Götene Municipality. These two areas work together to promote tourism. They have a company called "Götene-Lidköping Vänern Turist AB".

A Look at Lidköping's History

Lidköping became a city on July 21, 1446. This means it is one of Sweden's older cities. The city's coat of arms is almost as old as the city itself. Its design has changed over many years. However, it has always shown a bishop sitting down. People used to debate if it was a real bishop. In the 20th century, it was decided to be a picture of Saint Nicholas.

Around 1650, the city became part of the land owned by Jakob De la Gardie. But in 1655, the king decided to take back control of the city. To make up for this, De la Gardie was allowed to start a new city. This new city was built on the western side of the river, starting in 1670. It grew very quickly after its foundations were laid in 1672. In 1683, the king declared both parts of Lidköping united. The king also took back ownership of both sides.

A big fire destroyed the old town in 1849. Large parts of the new town were also damaged. After the fire, both parts of the town were rebuilt. They were laid out in a grid pattern, like a checkerboard.

Lidköping's Special Symbol

Lidköping is working hard to be known as "Lidköping by Vänern". As part of this effort, they have created a special symbol. This symbol shows its location next to Lake Vänern. You can see this symbol in all official places. It is also on the road signs when you drive into Lidköping.
