Limbdi is a town located in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat, a state in India. It's a place with an interesting history and important landmarks.

History of Limbdi

Limbdi was once a special area known as a "salute state" during the British Raj. It was ruled by the Jhala family.

Limbdi Satyagraha Movement

In 1938, the people of Limbdi formed a group called "Praja Mandal". This group wanted more rights and caused some disagreements with the local ruler.

In 1939, the "Praja Mandal" held a big meeting. The ruler was not happy about this. There was a lot of trouble at the meeting, and many people were hurt. Because of this, some people felt sad and decided to move away from Limbdi.

In 1940, a new ruler named Sir Digvijay took over. He ruled for only four months before he passed away. The last ruler of Limbdi was his son, Sir Chhatrapalsingh, who ruled from 1941 to 1948. After India became independent, Limbdi joined the rest of the country.

Education in Limbdi

Limbdi has a long history of education. The Lady Wellingdon Girls School was started in Limbdi on March 1, 1859. This was a very early girls' school in India, even compared to bigger cities. Today, it is known as Municipal School number 3 and teaches both boys and girls.

Limbdi is located at 22°34′N 71°48′E / 22.57°N 71.8°E / 22.57; 71.8. It is about 53 meters (173 feet) above sea level. The town is on National Highway 8 and is about 101 kilometers from Ahmedabad.

People of Limbdi

According to the 2001 census in India, Limbdi had a population of 40,067 people. About 52% of the people were male and 48% were female.

Limbdi has a good literacy rate of 70%. This means that 70% of the people can read and write. This is higher than the average for India, which was 59.5% at that time. About 78% of males and 62% of females in Limbdi could read and write. Around 12% of the population was under 6 years old.
