Limnodynastes (say "Lim-no-DINE-as-tees") is a group of frogs often called Australian swamp frogs. You can find them in Australia, southern New Guinea, and some Torres Strait Islands. These frogs usually live on the ground. They don't have sticky pads on their toes like some tree frogs.
Their size can be different depending on the type of frog. They range from about 4.5 centimeters (about 1.8 inches) to 9 centimeters (about 3.5 inches). The biggest one is the giant banjo frog. The skin between their toes (called webbing) also varies a lot. Some have very little webbing, while others have almost full webbing.
Most Limnodynastes frogs have an eardrum (called a tympanum) that you can't easily see. The only exception is the woodworker frog. All these frogs build a special foamy nest to lay their eggs. However, in some parts of south-eastern South Australia, female striped marsh frogs and spotted grass frogs do not build these foam nests. This is because they lack special skin flaps on their hands that help create the foam.
Types of Australian Swamp Frogs
In 2006, scientists made some changes to how amphibians are grouped. Two species, the ornate burrowing frog and Spencer’s burrowing frog, were moved to a different group called Opisthodon. This means there are now eleven known species in the Limnodynastes group.
Here are the different types of Limnodynastes frogs:
