Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Limpia Creek, originally known as the Rio Limpia, is a stream in Texas. It starts in Jeff Davis County, Texas and ends in Pecos County, Texas. The name "Limpia" comes from a Spanish word meaning "clear" or "clean water."

This creek begins high up in the Davis Mountains. It starts on the northeast side of Mount Livermore, about 7,160 feet (2,182 meters) above sea level. You can find its starting point at 30°38′27″N 104°09′42″W / 30.64083°N 104.16167°W / 30.64083; -104.16167.

Limpia Creek flows for 42 miles (68 kilometers). It travels through Limpia Canyon, past the town of Fort Davis, and through Wild Rose Pass. After leaving the canyon, it turns east. The creek then joins with Barrilla Draw and disappears into the ground. This happens at an elevation of about 3,533 feet (1,077 meters).

History of Limpia Creek

Limpia Creek was an important stop for travelers long ago. It provided water and food for animals. This made it a key spot on the San Antonio–El Paso Road. This road was used by people carrying goods and by stagecoach companies.

One famous stagecoach company was the San Antonio–San Diego Mail Line. They had a camp near Limpia Creek. This camp was about 32 miles west of Hackberry Pond. It was also about 18.86 miles from Fort Davis.

Later, the Butterfield Overland Mail company also used the creek. They set up their Limpia Station near the mouth of Limpia Canyon. This station was about 18 miles from Fort Davis. It was also 10 miles west of Barela Springs Station, which was further down Limpia Creek.
