Lin Jiamei (born June 21, 1924) is known as the wife of Li Xiannian, who was a former President of China. She served as the First Lady of China from 1983 to 1988. During this time, she shared the role with Zhuo Lin, the wife of Deng Xiaoping, a very important leader in China.

Her Early Career

Lin Jiamei finished her studies at Tong De Medical College in 1949. She worked as a pediatrician, a doctor who specializes in children's health. She held several important positions related to health care.

  • She worked at the Hubei Provincial Hospital.
  • She was the vice-president of the Wuhan Women and Children's Health Institute.
  • She was part of the State Council's Family Planning Commission.
  • She was also the chief of the Women and Children's Health Bureau in the Ministry of Health.

Lin was chosen to represent people at the National People's Congress, which is like a big meeting where important decisions are made for the country. She attended the 4th, 5th, and 6th Congresses. She also served on committees for the CPPCC. As of 2015, she was the president of the Chinese Association for Female Doctors. She also worked as a consultant for the Chinese Children's Development Center.

As First Lady

As the First Lady, Lin Jiamei often joined her husband, Li Xiannian, when he met with leaders from other countries. She traveled with him both in China and abroad. She became good friends with Nancy Reagan, who was the First Lady of the United States at the time.

In July 1985, Lin went with Li Xiannian on the first official visit by a Chinese President to the USA. From 1984, she also served as the deputy president of the China Medical Committee. She continued her work in health, leading the Women and Children's Department of the Ministry of Health.

Her Family Life

Lin Jiamei was the second wife of Li Xiannian. They had two daughters, Li Ziyang and Li Xiaolin, and one son, Li Ping. Lin also helped raise Li Jin, who was Li Xiannian's daughter from his first marriage.

On June 21, 2024, Lin Jiamei celebrated her 100th birthday.
