Lin Jiamei (Chinese: 林佳楣; pinyin: Lín Jiāméi) was born on June 21, 1924. She is known as the wife of Li Xiannian, who was a former president of China. Lin Jiamei served as the spouse of the president of the People's Republic of China from 1983 to 1988. During this time, she shared this important role with Zhuo Lin, who was the wife of Deng Xiaoping, a very influential leader in China.
Lin Jiamei's Work and Career
Lin Jiamei finished her studies at Tong De Medical College in 1949. She worked as a doctor, specializing in helping children. She held many important jobs until the 1980s.
- She was a pediatrician at the Hubei Provincial Hospital.
- She became the vice-president of the Wuhan Women and Children's Health Institute.
- She was a member of a committee that focused on family planning for the State Council.
- She was also the head of the Women and Children's Health Bureau within the Ministry of Health.
Lin Jiamei was chosen to be a representative at the National People's Congress several times. This is a very important meeting where laws and decisions are made for China. She also served on committees for the CPPCC, which is another important advisory group. As of 2015, she was the president of the Chinese Association for Female Doctors. She also worked as a consultant for the Chinese Children's Development Center.
Role as President's Spouse
Like other spouses of Chinese presidents, Lin Jiamei did not often appear in public by herself. However, she traveled with her husband, Li Xiannian, when he met with leaders from other countries. They met these leaders both in Beijing and during trips abroad.
She became good friends with Nancy Reagan, who was the First Lady of the United States at the time. Lin Jiamei went with Li Xiannian to the USA in July 1985. This was the first official visit by a Chinese president to the United States. From 1984, Lin also worked as the deputy president of the China Medical Committee. She was also the head of the Women and Children's Department in the Ministry of Health.
Personal Life
Lin Jiamei was the second wife of Li Xiannian. They had two daughters together, named Li Ziyang and Li Xiaolin. They also had one son, Li Ping. Lin Jiamei also helped raise Li Jin, who was Li Xiannian's daughter from his first marriage.
Lin Jiamei celebrated a big milestone on June 21, 2024, when she turned 100 years old.
