Exploring Lincoln's Geography
Lincoln covers an area of about 34.2 square miles (88.7 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with very little water.
Hills and Flat Lands in Lincoln
A notable range of hills, known as the "Marshfield moraine," runs through Lincoln. These hills stretch from Marshfield to Bakerville and Nasonville. Geologists believe this moraine was formed long ago by a continental glacier that stopped moving forward.
The rest of the town is mostly flat. Northwest of the moraine, the soil is heavy clay. This clay sits on a till plain, which is land also shaped by the ancient glacier. Beneath the clay, you can find sandstone and granite.
Lincoln's Past: A Brief History
The area that is now Lincoln was first mapped in the summer of 1851. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. In late 1853, another team marked the corners of each section of land. They walked through forests and waded through streams to measure the land.
Early Descriptions of the Land
After their work, the surveyor described the area. He wrote that the township had "much good land" and was "clear from swamp." He noted that most of it was "Rolling and good 2d Rate land." This means it had gentle hills and was good for farming.
The surveyor also mentioned that the area was "well watered." He said some streams were large enough for "Milling purposes," meaning they could power mills. The main trees were white pine, and on higher ground, there were sugar maple and basswood trees.
How Lincoln Got Its Name
Lincoln Township was first created in March 1868. It was originally called "Johnson Township." However, just a few months later, in June 1868, the township's name was changed. It was renamed in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.
