Lincolnville was started in 1867 by seven African-American men. They included Reverend Richard Harvey Cain, Daniel Adger, Marc Buffett, Reverend Lewis Ruffin Nichols, Hector Grant, Reverend M.B. Salters, and Walter Steele. They left their homes in Charleston because they felt they were treated unfairly there.

These men rode a train called the South Carolina Special. They were looking for land to buy from the South Carolina Railroad Company. They chose an area known as "Pump Pond." This spot was used by trains to stop for water, wood, and coal. The men signed a deal to buy 620 acres (2.5 square kilometers) of land for $1,000. Amos Williams also joined them in signing the first document for the town.

After they paid for the land, they asked for official permission to create a town. They received this permission on December 14, 1889. The settlement was named "Lincolnville" to honor Abraham Lincoln, a very important American president.
