Discovering Linden's Past
How Linden Got Its Name
The railway station in Linden was built in 1874. It was named after a special house called Linden Lodge. This house was built in 1865 by a local businessman named William Jolley Henderson. Before it was called Linden, the area was known as Seventeen Mile Hollow. This was because it was located 17 miles (about 27 kilometers) from the Nepean River. There was even a tollhouse here in 1849, where people paid to use the road. It was taken down in the 1860s when the railway was being built.
Local Landmarks and Stories
Linden is close to some interesting historical spots. One is the grave of John Donohoe, who was a convict working on the roads. He passed away on June 25, 1837.
Another nearby place is Caley's Repulse. This is a pile of rocks shaped like a pyramid. For a long time, people thought it was built by Aboriginal people. However, some historians now believe this is not true. They think the pile of rocks was actually made in 1912 by a group from the Royal Australian Historical Society, who might have built it in the wrong spot.
Other cool places to visit nearby include King's Cave and the Linden Observatory. Linden Creek is also a notable feature. It carves a deep valley on the north side of Linden and flows into the Grose River.
Important Heritage Sites
Linden has several places that are protected because of their historical or cultural importance. These are called heritage-listed sites:
- Blue Mountains National Park: This park includes many important Blue Mountains walking tracks.
- 91–111 Glossop Road: This is where you'll find the Linden Observatory Complex.
- Off Railway Parade: This area includes parts of Cox's Road and Early Deviations - Linden, Linden Precinct. Cox's Road was one of the first roads built across the Blue Mountains.
