History of Lindsay
How Lindsay Was Founded
People started settling in the rich farmlands near Shell Creek in 1862. This was possible because of the Homestead Act, which allowed families to claim land. Lindsay was officially planned out in 1886. Many of the first settlers came from Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. Because of this, they chose to name their new home "Lindsay." The village officially became a village on March 7, 1888.
Lindsay in the Early 1900s
By the early 1900s, Lindsay had modern services like electricity and a water system. This water system included a 100-foot deep well and a large 60,000-gallon water tank.
The Chicago and North Western Railroad had a train line that ran through Lindsay. This line was 115 miles long and had four freight trains and two passenger trains running every day. By 1917, the population of Lindsay had grown to almost 500 people.
The Lindsay Corporation
What we now know as the Lindsay Corporation started in Lindsay village in 1955. It was founded by Paul Zimmerer and was first called the Lindsay Manufacturing Company. This company makes equipment for irrigation (watering crops) and other farm automation tools.
Even though the company's main office is now in Omaha, Nebraska, it still has a factory in Lindsay. Its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange, which means people can buy and sell parts of the company. In 2005, the Lindsay Corporation was a very important employer in the village. It provided jobs for about 460 people, which was 80% of all the jobs in Lindsay at that time.
