Where to Find Lindsley Hall

The Story of Lindsley Hall

Building a New University Hall

This historic building was finished in 1853. It was made from grey limestone. A talented architect named Adolphus Heiman, who was from Prussia, designed it. He used a style called Gothic Revival. This style often features pointed arches and tall windows, like old churches.

Lindsley Hall was built as the main building for the University of Nashville. The university was actually closed from 1850 to 1855 because of a serious illness called cholera. The building was named Lindsley Hall to honor Dr. John Berrien Lindsley. He was the leader, or Chancellor, of the University of Nashville from 1855 until it closed in 1873.

A Hospital During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Lindsley Hall played a different role. In 1862, it was turned into a hospital. It cared for soldiers from the Union Army.

Many Uses Over the Years

After the Civil War, Lindsley Hall continued to be used for education. From 1867 to 1905, it was home to several schools. These included the Montgomery Bell Academy and Peabody College. It also housed the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal College, which later became Tennessee State University. This university is known as a historically black university.

Later, from 1914 to 1925, the building was used by the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. It also served as a place for the Tennessee State Guard to store weapons. It was even a public health center.

Home to a Children's Museum

From 1945 to 1974, Lindsley Hall was home to the Nashville Children's Museum. This museum later moved to a new spot and is now known as the Adventure Science Center.

More recently, in 2011, Lindsley Hall was updated. It was made into an office building. The renovations followed special green building standards. This means it was designed to be good for the environment.
