Geography of Lineville
Lineville covers a total area of about 0.90 square miles (2.33 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
History of Lineville
Lineville is thought to be the oldest town in Wayne County. It was officially planned and laid out in 1858.
The town is named Lineville because it sits right on the border between Iowa and Missouri. Part of the town is in Iowa, and another part is in Missouri. The town square is located on this state border. Businesses on the south side of the square are actually in South Lineville, Missouri.
In 1968, a big earthquake in Illinois was felt strongly in Lineville. The shaking was so long that it damaged the town's water tower. The tower then started leaking a lot of water every hour.
Schools in Lineville
Lineville used to be part of a school district called ACL Community Schools. This district included the towns of Allerton, Clio, and Lineville. In 1966, Allerton joined another school district.
After that, Lineville and Clio formed their own district called Lineville–Clio. All classes for this district were held in Lineville. It was one of the smallest school districts in Iowa.
In 2010, the state of Iowa decided that Lineville–Clio was too small to meet educational standards. So, the district closed down. Lineville–Clio then joined the Wayne Community School District. Now, all students attend classes in Corydon, which is about 22 miles away.
Transportation in Lineville
Lineville is located on U.S. Route 65, a major road. The city also has a railway line that is used by the Union Pacific Railroad. This railway line used to be part of the CRI&P (Rock Island) system.
Train traffic has increased a lot on this line since Union Pacific bought it. Lineville used to have passenger train service, but this was stopped in the 1960s.
