Linga is a small, empty island located about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) east of Muckle Roe in the Shetland Islands. It's a pretty round island, and its highest point is about 69 meters (226 feet) above sea level. The island covers an area of about 70 hectares (173 acres). It's a quiet place where no one lives!

Exploring Linga's Geography

Linga is almost perfectly round. It has a small hill in its center. This island sits between the mouths of two sea inlets, Olna Firth and Gon Firth. These inlets are on the west coast of the Shetland Mainland.

Where is Linga Located?

To the north of Linga, you'll find Delting, which is a part of the Shetland Mainland. The Mainland is also to the south and east of the island. If you look to the southwest, you'll see another island called Papa Little. To the north, there's a narrow strip of land called Mavis Grind.

Underwater Features Near Linga

Close to Linga, especially to its north, there is a hidden rock under the water. It is known as Groin Baa. Sailors need to be careful of this submerged rock.

Understanding Linga's Geology

The rocks that make up Linga are very old. They are mostly types of rock called gneiss and schist. You can also find some quartzite and pelite here.

What are Gneiss and Schist?

  • Gneiss is a type of rock that forms deep underground. It has bands of different minerals, almost like stripes.
  • Schist is another rock that forms under heat and pressure. It often has shiny minerals like mica, which can make it look sparkly.

What are Quartzite and Pelite?

  • Quartzite is a very hard rock. It forms when sandstone is heated and squeezed. It is mostly made of the mineral quartz.
  • Pelite is a type of rock that forms from very fine mud or clay. It can be found in layers.

Linga's Landscape

The surface of Linga is covered with rough grass. You will also see a lot of heather growing there. Heather is a tough plant that often grows in wild, open areas like this island.
