Lisa Milroy (born on January 16, 1959, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) is a talented Anglo-Canadian artist. She is well-known for her "still life" paintings, which show everyday objects. In the 1980s, her art often featured simple items against a plain background. Later, her paintings expanded to include landscapes, buildings, and even portraits. She loves to explore how things can be both still and moving in her art.

Early Life and Education

Lisa Milroy began her artistic journey at a young age. In 1977, when she was 18, she traveled to Paris to study at the Paris-Sorbonne University. A year later, in 1978, she moved to London. There, she attended a foundation course at Saint Martin's School of Art. She then earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Goldsmiths College, part of the University of London, in 1982.

Her Artistic Journey

Lisa Milroy's first solo art show was in 1984. It focused on still life paintings, which are artworks showing objects that don't move. Over time, her art changed and grew. She started painting many different things, like beautiful landscapes, interesting buildings, and even people's faces in portraits.

As her ideas for still life paintings became more varied, so did her painting style. She found new and exciting ways to paint. Throughout all her work, Lisa Milroy has always been fascinated by the connection between stillness and movement. She also loves to explore how paintings are made and how people look at them.

Awards and Recognition

Lisa Milroy has received important awards for her art. In 1989, she won the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize. This is a major award for painters in the United Kingdom. In 2005, she was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. This is a very special honor for artists in Britain.

Since 2009, Lisa Milroy has also taught art at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. From 2013 to 2017, she served as an Artist Trustee for Tate, a famous group of art museums. She also worked as a Liaison Trustee for the National Gallery from 2015 to 2017.

Art for a Good Cause: Hands On Art Workshops

In 2015, Lisa Milroy started a wonderful project called Hands On Art Workshops. This project helps children in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. She works with the Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR's Instant Network Schools program.

Through live video calls from London, Lisa Milroy teaches practical art workshops to primary and secondary school students in the camp. She also travels to Kakuma Refugee Camp every year to lead these workshops in person. This project helps young people learn and express themselves through art, even in challenging situations.
