Lispenard Stewart II (born June 19, 1855 – died October 15, 1927) was an American lawyer. He also served as a New York State Senator, helping to make laws for the state.

Early Life and Education
Lispenard Stewart II was born in Hudson, New York, on June 19, 1855. His parents were Lispenard Stewart and Mary Rogers Rhinelander. He had three siblings: Sarah, William, and Mary.
His niece, Anita Rhinelander Stewart, married a prince! She married Prince Miguel, Duke of Viseu, who was the grandson of King Miguel I of Portugal.
Lispenard Stewart II went to Yale University and graduated in 1876. After that, he studied law at Columbia Law School, finishing in 1878. While studying law, he also worked in a law office to gain experience.
A Career in Law and Business
Even before finishing law school, Lispenard Stewart II began working with his family's business. He was involved in managing the large family wealth and properties. This included the estate of his great-grandfather, William Rhinelander, who was a very successful merchant.
After becoming a lawyer in 1879, he started a law firm with his brother, William R. Stewart. They worked together until 1900. Lispenard spent much of his time managing family estates and helping with charity and education.
He became a director of the Rhinelander Real Estate Company in 1903. This company managed many properties. He later became its vice-president, serving until he passed away in 1927.
Serving New York State
Lispenard Stewart II was active in politics. He was a representative for Manhattan on the New York Republican State Committee. He also helped manage the committee's money as its treasurer.
He was chosen as a delegate for the National Republican Conventions in 1896 and 1900. These conventions are where political parties choose their candidates for president. In 1888, he was a presidential elector, which means he was part of the group that officially elects the president.
From 1890 to 1891, he served as a New York State Senator. He represented the 8th District of New York City. As a senator, he helped create and pass laws for the state of New York. He took over from Cornelius Van Cott and was later succeeded by Martin T. McMahon.
Helping the Community
Lispenard Stewart II was involved in many organizations that helped people. He was a director of the Real Estate Trust Company, which later became the Fulton Trust Company.
He was also a trustee for the Grant Monument Association, which looks after the tomb of President Ulysses S. Grant. From 1895 to 1903, he was the president of the New York State Prison Commission. He also worked with the New York Prison Reform Association to improve prisons.
He served on the board of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, a hospital for eye and ear problems. He was also a trustee for the Roosevelt Hospital. He helped manage the New York Zoological Society, which runs zoos.
Lispenard Stewart II was part of the committee that built the famous Washington Square Arch in New York City. His brother William led this committee. He also enjoyed sports and was president of the Newport Golf Club and a governor of the Newport Casino.
Personal Life and Legacy
Lispenard Stewart II was a member of Grace Church in New York City and Trinity Church in Newport. He was known for his social life and had many friends.
He owned a large home called "White Lodge" in Newport, Rhode Island. He often hosted parties and entertained important guests there. In 1897, he welcomed the Vice President of the United States, Garret Hobart, and his wife to his home. Other famous guests included Mrs. Astor, a very well-known socialite.
Lispenard Stewart II never married. He passed away at his home in New York City on October 15, 1927, after being ill for several years. His funeral was held at Grace Church, and he was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. He left most of his wealth to his brother, sister, and their children.
