It is also the official mammal emblem for the Northern Territory. Its scientific name is Macropus rufus.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has chosen the Southern Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby as its mammal emblem. These wallabies are smaller relatives of kangaroos. New South Wales

The state of New South Wales (NSW) is represented by the amazing Platypus. This animal is truly unique! It is one of only a few mammals that lays eggs instead of giving birth to live young. The cuddly Koala is the mammal emblem for Queensland. Koalas are marsupials famous for eating only eucalyptus leaves. They spend most of their lives in trees, sleeping up to 20 hours a day! Koalas are an iconic symbol of Australia. Their scientific name is Phascolarctos cinereus.

South Australia

In South Australia, the mammal emblem is the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. Wombats are strong, burrowing marsupials. They have a very tough backside, which they use to block their burrows from predators. These wombats are mostly active at night. Their scientific name is Lasiorhinus latifrons.

Western Australia
