Invader Zim is a fun American animated TV show created by Jhonen Vasquez. It first aired on Nickelodeon from 2001 to 2002. The show is about an alien named Zim who tries to take over Earth, but he's not very good at it! The main voice actors include Richard Steven Horvitz, Rodger Bumpass, Kevin McDonald, and Wally Wingert. Jhonen Vasquez also voices some characters. The show was canceled early, so some episodes were never finished.

Main Characters

Zim

Zim (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz) is an alien from the planet Irk. He's very proud and thinks he's great, but he's actually not very good at being an invader. His leaders, the Almighty Tallest, sent him to Earth on a fake mission, hoping he would just disappear. But Zim actually made it to Earth!

Zim tries to blend in by wearing a wig to hide his antennae and contact lenses for his eyes. Most humans don't realize he's an alien, except for Dib and Gaz. Zim doesn't have friends and often hurts his classmates if they try to be nice. But even then, his classmates usually defend him when Dib tries to tell them Zim is an alien. Zim wears a special backpack called a PAK. This PAK helps him live and has cool robotic spider legs that let him move super fast and climb anything.

Zim is always planning to take over or destroy Earth. Even with his advanced alien technology, his plans never work out. He also loves talking about himself in the third person, like saying "Zim will win!"

GIR

GIR (which stands for Garbage-issue Information Retrieval Unit) (voiced by Rosearik Rikki Simons) is Zim's robot helper. He's not very smart and often messes up. The Almighty Tallest built him from trash and gave him to Zim as a "secret" and "advanced" robot.

GIR wears a green dog suit to hide in public, and most humans believe he's a real dog, even though he acts nothing like one! GIR is cheerful, friendly, and loves Earth, unlike Zim. He's surprisingly good at cooking and dancing.

GIR doesn't really know who is a friend or an enemy. He also rarely understands how serious a situation is, unless it involves pain. But sometimes, he's actually smarter than Zim and can predict what will happen. GIR's happy and silly personality is very different from Zim's serious and bossy behavior. GIR enjoys Earth's culture, while Zim tries to stay away from it. GIR often doesn't listen to Zim, which makes Zim very angry. But sometimes, it seems like Zim and GIR actually care about each other.

Dib Membrane

Dibert "Dib" Membrane (voiced by Andy Berman) is a young paranormal investigator. He spends his time studying strange and supernatural things. He also tries to stop Zim from taking over the world. Dib's classmates often make fun of him and call him crazy. Even though they bully him, Dib still tries to protect them from Zim's evil plans.

Zim and Dib are usually enemies because Dib knows Zim is an alien trying to destroy Earth. But sometimes, they have to work together as a team. In an unfinished episode, it was shown that Dib lost interest in Zim and the paranormal, and Zim stopped trying to destroy Earth. But then Dib changed his mind, and Zim came back too.

Dib is sensitive about the size of his head. He gets upset when people point out how big it is. In one episode, his head even acted as a portal to other worlds!

People like the police and the FBI often find Dib annoying. But a few people realize he's right and sometimes help him. Dib is part of a secret group called "The Swollen Eyeballs," which tries to find real paranormal things. His secret name in this group is "Agent Mothman". Because Dib has warned people so many times about Zim, it's hard for anyone to believe him. He gets very excited when someone finally does! He always defends the study of paranormal things when someone makes fun of it.

Before the comic book series started in 2015, no one knew Dib and Gaz's last name. But in the comics and the movie Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, it was confirmed that their last name is Membrane, just like their father, Professor Membrane.

Gaz Membrane

Gazlene "Gaz" Membrane (voiced by Melissa Fahn) is Dib's younger sister. She loves playing video games, drinking soda, and eating pizza, especially from her favorite place, Bloaty's Pizza Hog. If anyone or anything stops her from getting these things, she gets very angry and wants revenge!

Like Dib, Gaz knows Zim is an alien, but she doesn't care much. She thinks Zim is too bad at his job to ever conquer Earth. Gaz is usually serious and rarely shows happiness. But she sometimes finds Zim and Dib's problems funny.

Gaz is often underestimated. In one episode, she even saved Dib's life from Zim! She was also planned to be Zim's love interest in an early idea for the show.

Gaz usually has a distant or cold relationship with most characters. She often dislikes her brother Dib, though sometimes she shows she cares about him. The only person she seems to get along with is her famous father, Professor Membrane. They seem to have a good relationship, even if it's not shown often.

Gaz has a creepy way of getting revenge on people who bother her, like Dib or the video game-obsessed boy named Iggins. She has shown amazing abilities in episodes like "Battle Dib" and "Game Slave 2."

Other Characters

Almighty Tallest (Kevin McDonald as Purple; Wally Wingert as Red): These two are the leaders of the Irken race. Irkens are judged by how tall they are, and the tallest Irken becomes the leader. Red and Purple are the same height, so they share power. They mostly just hang out, eat snacks, and boss around other Irkens. They travel the galaxy in their huge spaceship, the Massive, to watch over their invasion plans. They love making fun of Zim because he's so annoying and causes so much trouble.
Professor Membrane (Rodger Bumpass): He's a famous scientist who has a TV show called Probing the Membrane of Science. He's also Dib and Gaz's father. Professor Membrane is a brilliant scientist, but he's not very good at being a parent. He often sends his kids pre-recorded messages instead of being home. He's usually away helping the world. But he always makes sure to have a family night once a year and spends Christmas with his kids. He sometimes tells Dib to stop focusing on paranormal things and do "real science." He can even shoot lasers from his hands because he replaced his real arms with robotic ones after sharks bit them off!
Ms. Bitters (voiced by Lucille Bliss): She is Zim and Dib's grumpy and emotionless teacher. She's tall, thin, and elderly. She often makes up strange school rules or gives unfair punishments, especially to Dib. She sometimes appears out of nowhere, like from people's shadows.
Tak (voiced by Olivia d'Abo): Tak is a female Irken who hates Zim. Because of Zim, she missed her chance to become an elite soldier and was stuck cleaning a planet for 70 years. She escaped and came to Earth, disguised as a human girl, to try and take over Zim's mission and destroy Earth. But Zim, GIR, Dib, and Gaz had to work together to stop her.
Minimoose (Jhonen Vasquez): Minimoose is a small, purple, floating creature shaped like a moose. He was supposed to be Zim's other sidekick. He only appeared in the very last episode, "The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever," because the show was canceled before he could be in more episodes.
Computer (Jhonen Vasquez): This is Zim's house computer. It's spread throughout his house and base so Zim can talk to it anywhere. The computer also has some problems, like GIR. It sometimes doesn't have information about Earth or changes its voice to be very harsh for no reason.
Keef (Danny Cooksey): Keef is a very clingy kid at Zim's school. In one episode, Zim pretended to be his friend to seem normal. But Zim got tired of Keef always being around. When Keef's surprise party for Zim put Zim's base in danger, Zim tricked Keef into thinking a squirrel was him by replacing Keef's eyes with robot eyes.
President Man (voiced by Jeffrey Jones): He is the President of the United States in the show. He's not very smart and often does silly things, like trading the fate of a crisis for ninja star cookies, which he loves.
Iggins (Paul Greenberg): Iggins is Gaz's enemy and rival in video games. He's obsessed with video games. In one episode, he took the last Game Slave 2 console, which made Gaz furious. He was later arrested for just standing around.
