Rodger Bumpass (born November 20, 1951) is an American actor. He is most famous for being the voice of Squidward Tentacles on the popular animated TV show SpongeBob SquarePants. He also voices other characters on the show, like the purple doctor fish and various anchovies.

Besides SpongeBob SquarePants, he has voiced The Chief in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, Professor Membrane from Invader Zim, and Mr. Besser, the school principal in The Kids from Room 402. Rodger Bumpass has lent his voice to many other animated movies, TV shows, and video games, especially those featuring Squidward Tentacles from the SpongeBob SquarePants world.

Early life and education

Rodger Bumpass was born on November 20, 1951, in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a child, he loved listening to famous voice actors like Mel Blanc and would often imitate characters from Looney Tunes. He also enjoyed comedy albums by Jonathan Winters and Bill Cosby, and was inspired by Tim Conway's funny physical comedy.

Bumpass went to Little Rock Central High School, where he first learned about theater. He then studied radio and TV at Arkansas State University, also taking theater classes. While in college, he worked at the campus radio station and a local TV station called KAIT-TV. There, he did many jobs, including announcing, filming, and technical work. He even wrote, produced, and performed in a late-night comedy show called Mid-Century Nonsense Festival Featuring Kumquat Theater. After graduating in 1976, he moved to New York in June 1977 to pursue acting.

Rodger Bumpass has been acting and voicing characters in films since the 1960s. He also performed on stage from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. He is well-known for voicing The Chief in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, Doctor Light on Teen Titans, and Professor Membrane on Invader Zim.

In the late 1970s, Bumpass was part of several productions for National Lampoon, a comedy group. In 1977, he joined their music and comedy show That's Not Funny, That's Sick and toured with them. He also appeared in a TV special called Disco Beaver from Outer Space for HBO in 1978.

Today, Rodger Bumpass is best known as the voice of Squidward Tentacles and many other characters on the Nickelodeon animated comedy series SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2012, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his work as Squidward.

Personal life

On July 27, 2019, Rodger Bumpass married Angela VanZandt. They had attended high school together many years before.
