Rodger Bumpass (born November 20, 1951) is an American actor. He is famous for being the voice of Squidward Tentacles on the popular animated TV show SpongeBob SquarePants. He also voices many other characters on the show, like the purple doctor fish and different anchovies.
Rodger Bumpass has also voiced other well-known characters. These include The Chief in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, Professor Membrane from Invader Zim, and Mr. Besser, the school principal in The Kids from Room 402. He has lent his voice to many animated movies, TV series, and video games.

Early Life and Education
Rodger Bumpass was born on November 20, 1951, in Little Rock, Arkansas. His parents, Carroll and Virginia Bumpass, owned a dry cleaning business. As a child, Rodger looked up to famous voice actors like Mel Blanc. He loved to imitate characters from Looney Tunes and other cartoons. He was also inspired by comedians like Jonathan Winters and Tim Conway.
Bumpass went to Little Rock Central High School, where he first learned about theater. He then studied radio and TV at Arkansas State University. While in college, he worked at the campus radio station and a local TV station, KAIT-TV. At KAIT, he did many jobs, including announcing, filming, and being a cameraman. He even created and performed in a comedy show called Mid-Century Nonsense Festival Featuring Kumquat Theater. After graduating in 1976, he moved to New York in 1977 to pursue acting.
Rodger Bumpass's Career
Rodger Bumpass has been acting and voicing characters since the 1960s. He also performed on stage from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. Besides Squidward, he is known for voicing The Chief in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, Doctor Light in Teen Titans, and Professor Membrane in Invader Zim.
In the late 1970s, Bumpass worked on several projects for National Lampoon. In 1977, he joined their comedy show That's Not Funny, That's Sick and toured with them. He also appeared in a TV special for HBO called Disco Beaver from Outer Space. In 1979, he was supposed to star in a National Lampoon movie, but it was canceled. In 1980, he created a character called 'Fartman' for a National Lampoon music album.
Today, Rodger Bumpass is most famous for being the voice of Squidward Tentacles and many other characters on the Nickelodeon show SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2012, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his work as Squidward.
Personal Life
On July 27, 2019, Rodger Bumpass married Angela VanZandt. They had gone to high school together fifty years earlier.
