Chronology
Preceded by Disney's Raw Toonage

Bonkers is a fun American animated TV show from Disney. It's a spin-off from another show called Disney's Raw Toonage. The show first aired on February 28, 1993, and ran until February 23, 1994. You could watch it on The Disney Channel and later as part of The Disney Afternoon block. Reruns were shown until 1995 and then on Toon Disney until 2004.

What is Bonkers About?

The main idea of Bonkers is super silly! It's about a cartoon bobcat named Bonkers D. Bobcat. He used to be a big cartoon star, but then he lost his job. So, he decided to become a police officer!

Bonkers becomes the junior partner to Detective Lucky Piquel. Lucky is a serious human detective who really doesn't like cartoons. They work together to solve crimes in Hollywood, California. Bonkers often messes things up with his crazy cartoon antics. But somehow, his goofy actions usually end up saving the day!

Later in the series, Lucky Piquel gets a new job with the FBI. Bonkers then gets a new partner, Officer Miranda Wright. Miranda is also human, but she is much more patient with Bonkers. With Miranda, Bonkers often becomes the one who gets into funny, clumsy situations.

Meet the Characters

Bonkers D. Bobcat

Bonkers
Bonkers, as he appears in the series

Bonkers D. Bobcat (voiced by Jim Cummings) is a very energetic and hyperactive cartoon bobcat. He works in the Toon Division of the Hollywood Police Department. Bonkers was once a famous cartoon star. But his show lost its top spot in the ratings, so he was fired.

He became a police officer by accident. He helped Officer Lucky Piquel catch a mugger who was bothering Donald Duck. The police chief, Leonard Kanifky, thought Bonkers was a real-life hero. So, he offered Bonkers a job with the Hollywood PD. Bonkers accepted because he was unemployed. He asked for Lucky to be his partner, and that's how the Toon Division started!

Bonkers always means well, but his cartoon nature often causes trouble. He's not great at logical police thinking. His personality changes a bit between the "Lucky" and "Miranda" episodes. In the "Lucky" episodes, he's more like a detective who knows a lot about toons. In the "Miranda" episodes, he's often clumsy and the target of slapstick humor.

Supporting Characters

  • Fall Apart Rabbit (voiced by Frank Welker) is Bonkers' best friend. He was Bonkers' stunt-double in Hollywood. He literally falls apart easily, so he wears bandages. He appears only in the "Lucky Episodes."
  • Fawn Deer (voiced by Nancy Cartwright) is Bonkers' cartoon co-star and his main love interest. Bonkers always tries to impress her. She appears mostly in the "Miranda Episodes."

The Piquel Family

  • Detective Lucky Shirley Piquel (voiced by Jim Cummings) is Bonkers' first partner. He is a serious, old-school detective. His strict way of doing things often clashes with Bonkers' wild cartoon style. He is the father of Marilyn and husband to Dilandra.
  • Marilyn Piquel (voiced by Sherry Lynn) is Lucky's super smart daughter. She loves art and writing stories. She understands cartoons like Bonkers very well. She often helps her dad solve cases.
  • Dilandra "Dyl" Piquel (voiced by April Winchell) is Lucky's understanding wife. She supports her husband and their daughter Marilyn.

The Wright Family

  • Miranda Wright (voiced by Karla DeVito) is Bonkers' second partner. She is a police officer who is much more patient with Bonkers' antics than Lucky was. Her name is a play on "Miranda rights."
  • Timmy Wright is Miranda Wright's nephew. He seems cute but is very mischievous. He loves to play tricks on Bonkers.

Los Angeles Police Department Officers

  • Chief Leonard Kanifky (voiced by Earl Boen) is the absent-minded Chief of Police. He is the boss of Lucky and Bonkers. He often mispronounces Lucky's last name.
  • Sergeant Francis Q. Grating (voiced by Ron Perlman) is the boss of Bonkers and Miranda. He often gets annoyed by Bonkers' behavior.

Other Recurring Characters

  • Jitters A. Dog (voiced by Jeff Bennett) is a small, nervous dog. He was Bonkers' sidekick in Raw Toonage and appears in the Miranda episodes. He often gets hurt because of Bonkers' recklessness.
  • Professor Ludwig Von Drake (voiced by Corey Burton) is a scientist duck. He sometimes appears as an expert or invents things Bonkers uses.
  • Donald Duck (voiced by Tony Anselmo) is a famous Disney duck. Bonkers saved him from a robbery in the first episode.
  • Mickey Mouse (voiced by Wayne Allwine) and Goofy (voiced by Bill Farmer) also make cameo appearances.

Recurring Bad Guys

  • The Collector (voiced by Michael Bell) is the first villain Bonkers meets. He's a toon who collects other toons.
  • Ma Parker (voiced by June Foray) is a toon tow truck who is a criminal. She tricks people into thinking she's sweet.
  • The Rat (voiced by Brad Garrett) is a toon rat. He was actually a human trying to replace Mickey Mouse.
  • Wacky Weasel (voiced by Rip Taylor) is a very cunning and feared toon villain. He loves eggs of all kinds.
  • Al Vermin (voiced by Robert Ridgely) is a toon cockroach. He is Bonkers' enemy in the Miranda episodes.
  • Lilith DuPrave (voiced by Eileen Brennan) owns a printing office. She prints fake money and smuggles weapons.

Video Games

Bonkers also inspired three video games!

  • The first game, called Bonkers, came out for the Super NES in 1994. In this game, Bonkers is on his first solo case. He has to find three special items: the Sorcerer's Hat from Fantasia, the Mermaid's Voice from The Little Mermaid, and the Magic Lamp from Aladdin.
  • The second game, also called Bonkers, was released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994. Bonkers wants to win the "Employee of the Month" award. To do this, he needs to catch four criminals: Ma Tow Truck, The Rat, Mr. Big, and Harry the Handbag. Lucky is on vacation, so Bonkers has to catch them all by himself!
  • The third game, Disney's Bonkers: Wax Up!, was made for the Game Gear and Sega Master System.
